Mechanical engineers who are interested in presenting a technical paper or poster at IMECE 2017, which will take place from Nov. 3 to 9 at the Tampa Convention Center in Tampa, Fla., must submit their abstracts by March 6. This years IMECE technical program will encompass 20 tracks focusing on a variety of engineering areas including advanced manufacturing; energy; biomedical and biotechnology engineering; emerging technologies; advances in aerospace technology; education and globalization; transportation systems; micro- and nanosystems engineering and packaging; and acoustics, vibration, and wave propagation. Other topics to be covered during the conferences technical sessions will include fluids engineering; dynamics, vibration and control; safety engineering and risk analysis; materials; heat transfer and thermal engineering; mechanics of solids, structures and fluids; systems, design and complexity; and nondestructive evaluation (NDE), structural health monitoring and damage prognosis. Mars on Their Minds Mars on Their Minds Mars on Their Minds The Mars Societys University Rover Challenge leads educational institutions from around the world to build Mars rovers for high-level competition. More than 60 teams from 12 countries entered in 2016 and roughly half that survived the initial cut and descended on the small town of Hanksville, UT this past June to compete in the field. Among U.S. hopefuls were Yale University, Cornell University, and Washington State University (WSU) North Puget Sound at Everett, which took second place. The president of the WSU North Puget Sound engineering club described the rover they entered in the Challenge. You knew the rover had to fit through a two-meter wide gate but the main thing is weight. Its a 50-kg weight limit so there was a big design challenge when it came to chassis and suspension and getting over these rocks that are borderline boulders and going down a half-meter and meter drop, says Blaine Liukko, who has a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from WSU. The main thing our team did to overcome challenges was with the use of carbon fiber. Janicki Industries gave us carbon fiber panels that we cut with a waterjet and we custom designed our own wheels out of carbon fiber so we could have lightweight wheels. We were also able to mount motors and gear reducers inside the wheels. This way, it would help with ground clearance issues. Blaine Liukko with the rover that won 2nd place in the 2016 Mars Rover design contest. They designed their own suspension and all motor mounts were carbon fiber, he says. We did enough structural analysis and motion studies to know maximum forces, he explains. We had four wheels on our rover and each wheel was powered independently with a DC motor and a 64-to-1 gear reducer. The robotic claw didnt work well with an RC servo, according to Liukko, so they utilized one with a power screw and a gear DC motor, that gear motor mounted in the middle of the claw. The rover, in the end, was roughly three and a half feet wide by four feet long, all radio controlled. They made the initial cut, so now it was time for the next step. Competing in the Field The first days competition results would decide which teams would make the final cut and perform more difficult tasks, he says. You had to traverse the rover over to a service station and, using a camera on a robotic arm, you had to read a piece of paper and it was a multiple choice question, Liukko says. With the robotic arm, you had to pick either an A, B, C, or D switch. There were points for being able to flip the switch and also for being able to flip the correct one. After that, there were different obstacles and you even had the challenge of picking up four tools and putting them in a different area. We did fine but saw some areas for improvement in terms of our depth perception, among other things. After the cut was made, the final day consisted of four tasks, he says. The soil sample part required digging and analysis, with Liukkos team excelling here and ending up with 90 out of 100 points. The second task contained a challenge of picking up a gas can and putting it in a gas tank. The third, another highlight for the team, was a traversal task. There were five different gates to go through and they are all around the Mars landscape, he says. We didnt miss a single gate and didnt go out of bounds. One gate was 50 feet up a hill, there was another where you go traversing rocks and boulders and youre trying to do it without going out of bounds. The fourth task was about astronaut assistance and involved picking up tools and getting them to each astronaut. There were some difficulties here but we had less of a problem picking up tools than a good portion of teams, he says. When the final results were announced, Liukko was thrilled with the second place finish. Rzeszow University of Technology in Poland impressively took first place for a second year in a row. I think our team will be back to try and see if we can do even better, Liukko says. The great thing is we saw areas to learn from. But its more than a competition. The life experience it gives to students before going out into the workforce is incredible. Step 1: Decide the “What” without reinventing the wheel When deciding how you’d like to earn your extra income, Dorie Clark, Marketing Strategist says “to look at what people are already asking you for. While some skills might seem inherent to you, others may struggle in those same areas. Many people suffer from imposter syndrome and question whether they can really add value to someone’s life. Clark explains that in the early phases, the best thing you can do to develop your expertise and launch your side job is to start with 1 thing at a time. She says that when your attention is scattered in so many directions, it’s easy to get distracted from your goals. Once you have the wheels turning, you can do multiple things well, but when you start out, be disciplined about 1 thing at a time. Another advantage of starting small is that it removes the overwhelming feeling of not knowing exactly “what you want to do”. Rather, you can achieve a greater goal by chipping away at one piece at a time while staying motivated and on track. Decide upon some goals you can lean on to help guide your business venture. Once you have goals in place, you’ll be able to create some direction and plan around your business. If you’re committed to your goals and ideas, it will help keep you more committed, as trying to create a business when you’re already working from 9:00-5:00 can be challenging and requires sacrifice. For example, you might tell yourself, my goal is to earn $10,000 this year in extra freelance work. Or you want to get hired by 3 new clients in the next 6 months. Having this in your head will help guide your efforts and amount of work you need to put in. Imposter syndrome or lack of confidence can be a major hindrance when getting started. One thing Dorie recommends when trying to build up confidence in your offerings is to practice what you’re selling and getting testimonials. She recommends reaching out to friends and offering your services for free in exchange for referrals or testimonials. This can be a great way to establish your expertise, get comfortable with your offering, and create something meaningful for clients. Once you’ve successfully done something once, you can it as a service you provide! Even if it means doing it for free a few times, you can use this experience to build your skills and confidence, and help you create a pricing plan based on value. Step 5: Get your first client and sell yourself Figuring out who will foot the bill can feel daunting when thinking about building any business. To get your first client, you’ll have to do the leg work and get your message out there! Sites like Fiverr or Upwork create a marketplace for you to sell your skills. Natural word of mouth, networking, and keeping your eye on different online networks (alumni pages, LinkedIn groups, social media) are other great ways to look for new clients. As the gig economy continues to grow, it’s important to always reinvent yourself, and acquire new and marketable skills. Whereas the generation before us took on the mindset of “What kind of professional will I be ”, our generation can benefit from thinking “What skills can I leverage in different settings and new projects?” When I first started freelancing , I was offering resume, LinkedIn, and cover letter writing. I got my first client by posting an ad on Craigslist! Once I had a better grasp on that, I moved on to blogging for different HR websites by simply reaching out to editors with some article pitches. Recently, I’ve added quality assurance testing for training modules, a contract I found on my university alumni page. The best thing about side hustle building, is the organic growth of each project.
